ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB: CLEAN AIR CAMPAIGN
Results are in. Thanks to the Environmental Club members who helped with the
Clean Air Campaign surveys and educational awareness. As a result of your efforts, the
total number of vehicles idling during the survey weeks reduced from 86 to 20 - a 76% decrease.
Thank you also to those in the carpool lines for your participation and helping to do our
part to reduce emissions around the school campus.
ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
Please help us in our efforts to reduce auto emissions and improve air quality
in and around Dodgen. Perhaps you've noticed the newly posted "No Idling - Young Lungs
at Work" signs in the carpool line, received an informational hand-out in the carpool
line or saw your student wearing a No Idling sticker last week, all in our efforts to raise
awareness. In a baseline survey, over 60% of cars in the carpool line one afternoon were
idling, so when arriving early to pick up in carpool, please help do your part by shutting
off your engine. Other options would be encouraging walking, bike riding or riding the
bus to school. Thank you.

GEOGRAPHY BEE
Congratulations to our Dodgen winner Sahr Sing (6th Grade) and runner up Alex Reedy (6th
Grade)!
CONGRATULATIONS, DODGEN BAND STUDENTS who were recently awarded seats in the Georgia
Music Educators Association All-State Band! With well over 100,000 middle school band students
in Georgia, and with only about 130 students selected, the Middle School All-State band has
become the most competitive of the All-State music groups, including those at the high school
level. Many schools throughout Cobb County and the State of Georgia are not represented in
the All-State Band. We are proud to announce that the Dodgen Band
had three members selected for the All-State Band through a rigorous two-level
audition process. William Yao, an 8th grade clarinet student, Alyssa Soriano,
a 7th grade flute student, and Dylan Kim, a 6th grade French Horn student, will be
participating in the All-State Band event in Savannah on March 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
Dylan Kim is the first French Horn student awarded an all-state seat in Dodgen's
history! Dylan is also the very first Dodgen 6th grade Band student ever awarded a seat
in the All-State Band. Considering that Dylan was competing with 7th and 8th grade French
Horn students from across the state, this is a monumental accomplishment!
Congratulations to these three fine student musicians
as they travel to Savannah representing Dodgen Middle School and our Dodgen
community!

Scholastic Book Fair a Great Success!
We had another very successful Dodgen/Scholastic Book Fair and it would not have been possible
without all of YOU!
A huge "THANK YOU" to all the students, parents, teachers, volunteers, the PTSA, the staff
at Dodgen, and the Media Center crew that helped to make this year's Book Fair a great success. Overwhelming
support was offered throughout the entire week and those who helped should be VERY PROUD of their efforts.
We had a total of 27 parent volunteers and good number of student volunteers.
We completed the Book Fair with over $9200 in total sales. The Media Center received 112 new books
and will get a significant portion of that for more books and new equipment. THANKS AGAIN for all you
do!

From National PTA: Urge Your Representatives to Pass the Child Nutrition Bill
The House of Representatives Must Act to Ensure Historic Improvements Are
Not Lost
National PTA® needs your help to encourage the House of Representatives to vote on S. 3307, The
Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, when they return from the November elections. PTA members should reach
out to their representatives to urge swift action on the Senate bill in order to enact its many improvements
to child nutrition programs into law. Please see the action alert to inform your elected representative
that the health of our children should not wait another year.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act increases access to vital anti-hunger measures, improves the nutrition
quality of foods served in schools, and provides the supports necessary for school food service workers
to meet the needs of American children. The $4.5 billion increase in child nutrition funding over the
next ten years provided under the bill is a substantial investment at a time when both child hunger
and obesity are at alarming levels. The bill includes common-sense measures to help ensure that both
of these trends can be reversed, including supports for the direct certification process, updated nutrition
standards for all foods served in schools, increased access to local produce and school gardens, and
enhanced notification and engagement of parents and the surrounding community in matters that affect
the well-being of students.
It is essential that our nation's students are provided healthy, nutritious options in school in
order for them to reach their physical and academic potential. National PTA needs your help to influence
Congress and make sure this legislation becomes a legislative priority.
Take Action Today! Contact your Representatives today and let them know that the health of our children
can not wait another year. Please visit http://capwiz.com/npta2/home

Magnet School Information Presented by Dr. Tiffany Stark
Thursday, September 9 at 6:30pm in the Dodgen Theater
The Cobb County School District recognizes that students who demonstrate exceptional potential
in a specific area may benefit from a specialized program. Cobb’s magnet programs allow students to
pursue their interests, develop their talents, and extend their competencies beyond the usual scope
of high school. During fall semester, eighth grade students at each district middle school are provided
information about all magnet programs. Due to limited space at each program, students are selected
through a highly-competitive, rigorous application process. Applications to academic magnets are due
in early December. Performing arts candidates participate in an application/audition process during
spring semester. The district provides arterial transportation for students attending magnet programs.
Interested students and parents should go online or contact program coordinators for more information.
