DODGEN BAND NEWS
The final All-State Band audition was held in Perry, GA, Saturday, January 7.
Eight of our awesome Dodgen Band students passed the district level audition, awarding them a spot on the final audition roster. The final audition involved the performance of a lengthy, very difficult etude and the sightreading of two very advanced musical exercises, one in ¾ time and the other in 6/8 time. The results were announced Sunday evening with five Dodgen Band students being awarded seats in the All-State Band! With over 100,000 middle school band students in Georgia, and only 222 selected between the two bands, the middle school All-State Band audition remains the most competitive music audition of any kind (high school or middle school) in the state!
Our five winners are:
Shannon Ke- 1st Chair, Principal Clarinet
Jonathan Chiou- 1st Chair, Principal French Horn
Aly Soriano- 2nd Chair Flute
Connor Bhandari- 6th Chair Tuba
Melanie Mislo- 6th Chair Tuba

A special footnote: There are 15 principal, 1st chair positions, one for each instrument in each of the two All-State Bands for a total of 30. Dodgen Middle School Band students were the ONLY Cobb County middle school band students awarded top, 1st Chair principal positions except for a Bari sax player from McClure Middle School. Our five All-State winners will have a plaque with their picture mounted on the Dodgen Band's Wall of Fame and will spend three days in Savannah for the All-State event during the first week of March. Congratulations to these fine student musicians for this incredible accomplishment!

DODGEN GIVES BACK GIVING REPORT
The 2nd Annual DGB Drive was a wonderful success. The PTSA along with the Community Outreach Team cannot thank you enough for your donations this year. Congratulations!! 8th grade donated approximately $900 in gift cards to Calvary Children's home. The children were overwhelmed knowing that it was kids their own age thinking of them during the holidays! 7th grade donated 73 gifts to the Cobb County DFCS Foster Children's Secret Santa program. Their donations gave 9 children who were taken into the program the week before Christmas some much needed holiday happiness. At such a difficult and sad time for those 9 children, the Dodgen families showed them that they ARE special. The remainder of the gifts are being used for the DFACS Gift Closet, where children are allowed to choose a gift on their birthday. The closet was basically bare before Dodgen Gives Back. 6th grade donated over 100 gifts for the families and children staying in the Cancer Center at Scottish Rite. Mary's Merry Christmas Foundation hosted a family dinner for all of the families on December 23rd and decorated each child's room. Santa delivered bags full of gifts to the children and their families on Christmas Eve. Additional gifts were given to the play center and library at Scottish Rite.

DODGEN GIVES BACK
Dodgen Gives Back collections will be in the pod of each grade level. Thank you in advance for your support of Dodgen Gives Back.

6th grade: AFLAC Cancer Center at Scottish Rite
Donations Due: December 22
7th grade: Cobb County DFCS Secret Santa
Donations Due December 16
8th grade: Calvary Children’s Home
Donations Due: December 22

Dodgen Gives Back was started last year as an opportunity for our students, parents, families, faculty and staff to enrich the lives of those in need in our community and the world around us. We were able to assist several organizations with our collections of needed items and uplifted the spirits of hundreds through the letters our students wrote with the help of our faculty. Grade level assemblies by motivational speaker Dan Thurman encouraged students to set goals for their lives and work hard to reach them.
This year Dodgen Gives Back will focus on giving to those in need closer to home. Our Community Outreach Committee has organized a donation drive that will help three area organizations. The donation drive has been organized by grade level and homerooms in an effort to help with the specific needs of each. Click to open DODGEN GIVES BACK GIVING LIST (.pdf)
Please know that this is a suggestion list; feel free to donate to the organization of your choice and the item of your choice. The letter writing activity this year will also focus on those close to home with letters of support to family, friends and neighbors. We also have another set of grade level assemblies students will attend.
On behalf of Dodgen PTSA we would like to thank you in advance for your support of Dodgen Gives Back. Our hope is that by Working Together our Dodgen family can make a difference in our community in a positive way. If you have any questions please email communityoutreach@dodgenptsa.org.
Thank You,
Marge Cavitt & Clairevon Nixon

MAGNET SCHOOL PRESENTATION
Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30pm Dodgen Middle School Theater
The Cobb County School District recognizes that students who demonstrate exceptional potential in a specific area may benefit from a specialized program. Cobb’s magnet programs allow students to pursue their interests, develop their talents, and extend their competencies beyond the usual scope of high school. During fall semester, eighth grade students at each district middle school are provided information about all magnet programs.
Due to limited space at each program, students are selected through a highly-competitive, rigorous application process. Applications to academic magnets are due in early December. Performing arts candidates participate in an application/audition process during spring semester. The district provides arterial transportation for students attending magnet programs. Interested students and parents should go online or contact program coordinators for more information. Dodgen parents and students are invited to attend!
